Working towards lower emissions

In inland shipping, we are constantly looking for ways to reduce fuel consumption and emissions. We do not rely on one major solution, but on a combination of measures. These include technical innovations, alternative fuels and smart transport planning. By carefully matching cargo, routes and available vessel capacity, we can make waterborne transport increasingly efficient.

Step by step towards more sustainable transport

At Rijnaarde, we work together with skippers and clients to make transport by water as efficient as possible. We continuously look at what can be done in practice. Sometimes this means adjusting the planning or route. In other cases, it means making better use of available vessel capacity. Where possible, we also take steps towards cleaner fuels such as Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO).

We also invest in making vessels more sustainable. For example, we support skippers in investing in cleaner engines. These are important steps, but change in inland shipping takes time. New technologies and sustainable fuels offer opportunities, but they are not always available everywhere or immediately applicable. That is why we continually assess which solutions really work in practice. After all, making transport more sustainable only has an impact if the solutions remain practical and affordable for the entire logistics chain.

In this way, we are gradually working towards lower-emission transport by water. Not with one major solution, but with measures that can already be put into practice today and that contribute to a more sustainable inland shipping sector.

CO₂ Reduction through HVO allocation for your project

One of the ways we are already taking steps towards lower emissions is by using HVO (Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil). This fuel can be used in existing vessel engines, meaning no modifications to the vessel or logistics process are required. In addition, using HVO can significantly reduce CO₂ emissions compared with fossil diesel.

This is particularly relevant for clients who want to make progress towards their sustainability goals. For example, they may want to include CO₂ reductions in their sustainability reporting, tenders or project calculations. Rijnaarde is happy to work with you to explore the possibilities.
